Also called the Via Crucis or Way of Sorrows, the Stations of the Cross depict Jesus' journey on the day he was crucified. Each station has a companion prayer and represents steps on the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem as Christ processed to Mt. Calvary.
You can pray the Stations any time of year. Traditionally, parishes host Stations of the Cross service on Fridays during Lent at 3 p.m. – the hour recognized as Christ's death.
Via Crucis: Praying and Meditating with Jesus on the Way of the Cross
In a world that is suffering, the prophetic voice of St. Oscar Romero, martyr and former Archbishop of San Salvador, challenges us to provide a truly Christian answer to pressing issues.
This special bilingual Stations of the Cross edited by Br. Javier Del Angel De Los Santos, OFM, in 2024, incorporates the texts of St. Oscar Romero to invite the faithful to consider how God is calling them to be instruments of his peace as they meditate on Jesus’ final hours.
During Lent, service to others comes into focus, and rightly so. We invite you to explore the many places where the friars deliver the Good News all year round.
Join Franciscans at parishes and shrines, schools and campus ministries, retreat centers and soup kitchens in service to our brothers and sisters. Where there is a need, there is God.
“If we are going to convince others, especially those on the margins of society, that there is a deeper goodness of humanity worth discovering, we must express joy for the transfigured creation and humanity that we are called to love.”
— Br. Tyler Harris, OFM
