On World Mission Sunday, the Church jubilantly celebrated the ordination of three new deacons – two from the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe – commissioned to carry forth the transformative message of Jesus Christ to the world.
On Oct. 19 at Mother of the Americas Catholic Church in Chicago, Bishop Joseph Perry led a bilingual Mass ordaining Joshua Richter, OFM, Maikel Eduardo Gómez Pérez, OFM, and Seminarian Victor Mutobera of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers to the diaconate.
“Today we have the privilege of commissioning additional workers for the Lord’s vineyard through their respective charisms, and we pray for them,” Bishop Perry said as he addressed the friars, family and friends gathered to witness the ordination. “What we have all found in Christ – mainly forgiveness, hope, acceptance and wisdom – we are encouraged to share with our neighbors. Christ needs us to spread fearlessly the Good News to those around us.”
Br. Joshua was inspired by the homily.
“The bishop said, ‘It is not our perfection or authority that reveals Christ, but our willingness to be honest about our wounds, and to let others experience Christ through our vulnerability,’” Br. Joshua said. “His words remind me that serving as a deacon isn’t about having all the answers, but is about showing up fully human, trusting that Christ meets people in those honest, tender places.”

Bishop Perry praised the men for their progress toward the priesthood. He advised them to expect challenges, seek support, stay genuine, accept criticism, and share their vulnerabilities with those they serve.
“People who are hurting need to know the kingdom of God is at hand,” he said. “For too long, [the Church has] failed to share such a hope-filled message. Now more than ever, we need to get it right. The Lord is counting on us to make him credible in this world. And in so doing, by going about in the world as fervent Christians, we can bring hope to this broken world.”
Br. Larry Janezic, OFM, representing the Franciscan Friars of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe, asked Bishop Perry to ordain the friars as deacons and confirmed their suitability.
Br. Maikel, from Holguín, Cuba, has served as a Franciscan friar in the Caribbean and worked with immigrants at the El Paso, Texas border. He now serves St. Peter Claver Parish in Macon, Georgia, and hopes to be ordained next year.
“I pray that I may live this gift faithfully, always available to serve where I am most needed, whether at the altar, on the soccer field with young people, or in the community, sharing life with everyone,” he said, calling himself a “very happy friar.”
Br. Maikel’s vocation is inspired by St. Francis and many others, especially his grandmother Alma, who passed away in Cuba the day before his diaconate ordination.
“She taught me to trust in God amid religious persecution in a country under communist dictatorship,” he said. “My brothers in fraternity have also inspired me with their example of what it means to live the Gospel with joy.” Br. Maikel mentioned “anonymous saints who have accompanied me on my journey,” such as youth groups and the immigrants he served in El Paso, “in whom I saw reflected the face of Christ, poor and humble.”

Br. Joshua, from Hamilton, Ohio, near Cincinnati, and one of seven siblings, joined the Franciscans after graduating from Miami University. He made his solemn profession in August and studies theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He will serve as a deacon at Our Lady of Pompei Parish and hopes to be ordained a priest in August 2026.
Br. Joshua completed his pastoral immersion year under Deacons John Gerke and Dave Harcourt at St. Clement Church in Cincinnati.
“Watching how they listen to people, respond with empathy, and balance their diaconal service with both a career and family life has given me a living model of what diaconal ministry looks like,” Br. Joshua said.
He intends his diaconate ministry to express Franciscan fraternity, joy and simplicity. Guided by Br. Mike Ward, OFM, Br. Joshua strives to share Gospel joy and Franciscan values in his service and preaching.
“My prayer is that my ministry helps others experience God’s closeness and the peace that comes from living the Gospel with a Franciscan heart,” he said.
