Born to Irish immigrants and raised in New York City, Fr. Mychal joined the Order of Friars Minor in 1954. He dedicated his life to living the Gospel in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Throughout his ministry, he became known for his ability to meet people where they were, offering friendship and spiritual support without judgment. He ministered among people experiencing homelessness, those struggling with addiction, and individuals living with AIDS during a time when many faced fear and isolation. Whether serving in parishes, walking city streets, or accompanying people through illness, grief and personal hardship, he sought to reflect God's love through simple acts of presence and care. 

Fr. Mychal was appointed chaplain to the New York City Fire Department in 1992. He quickly became a beloved figure among firefighters and emergency personnel, sharing in their joys and struggles. He celebrated Masses, provided counseling, attended fire scenes and stood beside first responders during some of New York's most challenging moments, including comforting the families of those killed when TWA flight 800 crashed into the waters off Long Island, New York, in 1996. He is remembered not only as a chaplain, but as a trusted friend whose compassion brought comfort in times of crisis. 

More than 20 years later, Fr. Mychal's witness still inspires people around the world. For Franciscans, he remains an example of courageous faith and unwavering dedication to those most in need. His legacy continues in the lives he touched, the ministries he inspired, and the many people who find hope in his story.  

Service on Sept. 11, 2001

Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM, served as a chaplain to the New York City Fire Department, from 1992 to 2001. After the Twin Towers were struck, he joined the hundreds of firefighters and other emergency personnel at the World Trade Center, offering prayers, encouragement and spiritual support as the crisis progressed.

Fr. Mychal was administering last rites to a fallen firefighter when he was killed by falling debris as the South Tower collapsed. He was 68 years old, a professed Franciscan friar for 46 years and a priest for 40 years. Later, he became known as the first officially identified victim of the Sept. 11 attacks, a distinction resulting from the early recovery and identification of his remains.

For Franciscans, firefighters and countless others, however, Fr. Mychal is remembered not just for how he died, but for the compassion, courage and faithfulness with which he lived and served.
